Nastja Säde Rönkkö, 6 Months Without, 2018-2019

Nastja Säde Rönkkö is an artist living in London and Helsinki. She works with video, performance, installation, participatory art, internet and text. Her projects investigate the relationship between the digital era, power, humanity and the future of our planet. She is particularly fascinated with how concepts such as love, slowness or affection can be silent yet radical ways to be and act in the world. Her practice dreams about the future and explores presence through politics and poetics of emotion. See Nastja’s full bio here.

For her 2018-2019 work, 6 Months Without, Nastja lived entirely without the Internet. Everything, from personal to professional communication, navigating a city, socializing and working happened offline. At the heart of the project was a space at Somerset House Studios, London where she conducted workshops and seminars. People could reach her by letter writing, phone calls or visiting my studio. The work was produced by Somerset House Studios, Finnish Institute London and Wysing Arts Centre, UK. Supported by The Finnish Cultural Foundation and The Kordelin Foundation. It was also featured in the exhibition 24/7: A Wake-Up Call for Our Non-Stop World, curated by Sarah Cook at Somerset House, 2019-2020. We’re very pleased that Nastja will present the project at the workshop, which we will then adopt as a case study in the breakout sessions.
